Elhuyar Foundation posts ItzulTerm tool on Internet – free service to get most from translation memories

The R+D+i Unit at the Elhuyar Foundation has posted the ItzulTerm tool on the web. This Internet tool automatically extract pairs of equivalent terms in Basque and Spanish from a system of translation memories. It is above all aimed at those working with TM systems: translators, translation services, terminologists, linguists, Basque language workers, and so on.

ItzulTerm is a free service that automatically extracts pairs of equivalent terms in Basque and Spanish from a system of translation memories. The user will be able to work on the results of the search and give them the use he or she wishes: to create dictionaries, to enhance the use of TMs, to use these for automatic translations, etc. Moreover, It also provides the possibility of improving on the result of the extraction and editing the results. The ItzulTerm service is based on the ElexBi tool, developed by the Elhuyar Foundation R+D+i Unit. This tool combined linguistic and statistical techniques during the process of extraction of the equivalent terms.

The most important steps in using ItzulTerm

With ItzulTerm, the user will have the opportunity of getting the best use of its translation memories – and in just three easy steps: Automatic Extraction, ‘Manual Treatment’ and ‘Export’. ‘Automatic Extraction’ involves automatically extracting pairs of terms using linguistic and statistical techniques. ‘Manual Treatment’, on the other hand, provides the possibility of working on the suggestions: accepting or rejecting them, using advanced options to edit the results, and so on. Finally, ‘Export’ is an option for downloading the pairs of terms accepted and creating a personalised bilingual dictionary.

The ItzulTerm Project was subsidised by the Department of Culture of the Basque Government within the remit of the 2007 funding programme earmarked for ICTs.
