The Association of Basque Pharmacists – Farmazialari Euskaldunen Elkartea (FEUSE) – has awarded Igor Horrillo from Mendaro (Gipuzkoa) this (the second) year’s “FEUSE SARIA” prize for his work “Major Depression”.
The awarded work goes into numerous aspects related to depression, a pathology that, according to the WHO, has an incidence amongst 10.2% of the population. Women have twice the probability of suffering from the disorder than men and, according to the most recent studies, only one third of patients suffering from depression receive appropriate treatment.
This is why Igor Horrillo, after studying the neurobiological bases of the disorder, cites the indicators and methodology used in his diagnoses. He also analyses current treatments, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological, explaining the positive and negative aspects of the two. Future lines of research and new treatments were also under study in this research work awarded by FEUSE.
The FARMAZIALARI EUSKALDUNEN ELKARTEA created the FEUSE SARIA prize in 2003 with the aim of encouraging quality and quantity of technical texts in the pharmaceutical field written in Basque. The competition is convened twice yearly and is limited to pharmacists or students of pharmacy. The prize is 3,000 euros.
